The brand
Maxim’s de Paris, since 1893
The Legend of Maxim’s begins in May 1893. Irma de Montigny, an attractive courtesan, opens the door of a small bistro, located at 3 rue Royale. Just a few days earlier, Maxim’s was founded as a bistro by Maxime Gaillard, formerly a waiter. It becomes the place for ‘gallant’ rendez-vous of the Belle Époque.
THE RESTAURANT
During the occasion of the 1900 Exposition Universelle, it becomes one of the most popular and fashionable restaurants in Paris under its next owner, Eugène Cornuché. By appealing to the popular artists of Nancy School, he transforms the establishment into a true temple of Art Nouveau, now classified as a ‘historical monument in France’.
Maxim’s becomes the indispensable and privileged location for major international celebrities:
Marcel Proust, La Belle Otéro, Maria Callas, Sacha Guitry, as well as Brigitte Bardot, Barbara Streisand, John Travolta, Dita Von Teese, Lady Gaga, and Kylie Minogue, etc.
Maxim’s, a certain art of French Living
After more than 120 years of history, Maxim’s has become a real legendary world and is today one of the most famous french brand with its priceless heritage.

PIERRE CARDIN
Pierre Cardin, the famous fashion designer known for his futuristic creations, has been a regular at Maxim’s since the early 60s. He comes to dinner with friends including Jeanne Moreau and Jean Cocteau.
Being a great collector of Art Nouveau from a young age, he bought the famous restaurant when Mr. & Mrs. Vaudable offered it to him in 1981.

of furniture and ‘Art Nouveau’ objects collected by Pierre Cardin for over sixty years.
An exceptional collection presented in an intimate place recreating the atmosphere of an apartment of a courtesan of the Belle Époque, 12 furnished rooms of the best creations of the 1900s .
More than 550 pieces imported from around the world by the most prestigious designers such as Majorelle, Tiffany, Gallé, Massier and Toulouse-Lautrec.
The bedroom is the most sacred of our courtesans of rue Royale. One can find Majorelle’s bed covered with irises and water lilies, translucent Tiffany lamps and evanescent biscuits by Karlsbad. It is here that the courtesans put the final touches of beauty on themselves such as hair accessories, dresses, hats, and jewels.
Passionate by Art Nouveau, the courtesans are offered the most beautiful furniture from admirers throughout Europe.
On display is a sofa inspired by Gaudi, shiny earthenware from the Riviera, and a side table in precious marquetry by Marjorelle. Everything is made to seduce.
Appearing in Europe in 1880, Art Nouveau draws inspiration from the vegetal and floral world and the imagination of women.
This dream world invades obsessively the glazed pottery, earthenware, glass and furniture in a fabulous mix of curves and true fireworks of color.

Restaurant
The Restaurant
A historically ranked landmark, the Maxim’s restaurant has become a symbolic place of Art Nouveau, French Gastronomy and also the most imperative meeting place for numerous international celebrities.
MENU AT MAXIM’S
Browse Maxim’s de Paris’ menu.
During the Belle Époque, a new gastronomy is born. The menu becomes more like a dress code where it boasts mixed soups, eight to ten entrées, roasts, salads, and desserts.
Many recipes were developed during the time of splendorous gourmet meals in the kitchens of Maxim’s restaurant.
The History
The legend of Maxim’s begins in 1893 when Maxime Gaillard, formerly a waiter, opens a small bistro at 3 rue Royale.
On May 21, 1893, the day of the Prix de Diane, Irma de Montigny, a young Parisian comedian enters Maxim’s. Excited by what she discovers, she says to Maxime Gaillard, ‘I’m going to help launch your restaurant.’ She keeps her word and a legend begins…
In 1898, Maxime Gaillard then leaves the place to Eugène Cornuché.
Art Nouveau, which inspires true passion, gives Eugène Cornuché an idea to decorate the Maxim’s restaurant by using great artists from the Nancy School. In less than two years, they transform the restaurant into an Art Nouveau temple.
His secret weapon was the women. He often said, ‘an empty room……..never! I always have a beauty sitting by the window, in view from the sidewalk.’ Therefore, Cornuché received Maxim’s elite French gallantry and a legend was created.
Celebrities at Maxim’s
The royal, wealthy and famous people from Tout-Paris of the early century socialized at Maxim’s. Famous guests included Edward VII, Marcel Proust, the playwright Georges Feydeau who wrote the popular comedy called La Dame de Chez Maxim’s (‘The Lady from Maxim’s’), the exquisite Yvonne Printemps, Sacha Guitry with his sense of humor, Greta Garbo, and Marlène Dietrich…
However, the most prosperous period remains the fifties decade with guests such as Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, the Windsors, the producer Max Ophüls, and the wealthy Barbara Hutton, the heiress of Woolworth stores and the wife to Cary Grant. All of Hollywood dines on the luxury banquettes of this grande salle.
In the seventies, Brigitte Bardot causes a scandal by entering barefoot in the restaurant. Sylvie Vartan dances with John Travolta and we recognize Jeanne Moreau, Barbara Streisand, Barbara Hendricks and Pierre Cardin…
Today, the restaurant welcomes the contemporary artistic world and the display is exquisite: Hosting Alexander McQueen to Andrea Casiraghi, Jean Michel Villmotte to Sophie Calle, Renée Flemming, Gloria princess of Thurn and Taxis, Dita Von Teese and Lady Gaga.
The Maxim’s restaurant is currently closed for works.
Reopening in October.

The Decors
In the heart of Paris, between Place de la Concorde and the Madeleine, stands rue Royale. The façade of Maxim’s, a symbol of Art Nouveau, was completed for the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
The elegant interiors are inspired by fauna, flora and feminine charm, flowing gracefully with undulation. Seemingly, one can find red poppies, lilies, irises, chestnut leaves, dragonflies, butterflies, insects and birds throughout the restaurant. Art Nouveau banishes all angles and straight lines in favor of curvy, sensual and round shapes that wrap and entangle it. Great artists such as Gallé, Guimard, Marjorelle, Tiffany and Macintosh were the leaders of this artistic movement.
